Learning reflection

What I have been learning a discourse approach in reading?

1. Recount
The purpose is to tell what happened. There are 3 types of recount that are Personal Recount, Factual Recount, and Imaginative Recount. In a recount we use simple past tense to tell a sequence of events, it begins with an orientation, events, and reorientation.

2.Narratives
Narratives are to entertain, i.e. to gain and hold the reader's interest in a story, to nourish and extend the reader's imagination.

 3.Descriptive
Descriptive is to describe and to reveal a particular person, animal, place, or thing.

4. Procedure
Procedure is tell us how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps. The purpose is to tell the reader how to do or make something.

5. Comparison and Contrast
It presents similarities (comparisons) and differences (contrasts) between two or more things, or both similarities and differences.

6. Cause and Effect
Cause/Effect is used to show how the facts or concepts result due to other facts, events or concepts.

7. Definition and Classification
Define = to say what the meaning of something.
Classify = to divide things into groups according to their type.

8. Exemplification
Exemplification writing uses specific, vivid examples for the purpose of adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea.

9. Problem and Solution
Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue.

Finally, Teacher a great teacher and kind to me and I would like to say Thank you very much to you. You are my best teachers.

Week13 Problem and Solution

Today, I studied last lesson which is Problem and Solution. First, teacher began to explain what it is. We started to read an example that is about teen pregnancies and analyzed the text.

Example: It seems like there has been a surge in teen pregnancies these days. Teen pregnancies make it very difficult for young mothers to pursue their dreams and meet the demands of an infant. Fortunately, most teen pregnancies can be easily prevented by using birth control; however, even birth control is not 100% effective. The most effective way to prevent teen pregnancies is abstinence, which is 100% effective.

Next, we opened the next page, she read a list of problem-solution markers and we repeated after her. After that, we did the Skill practice by circling the Problem Markers and highlighting the Solution Markers. This below as an example.

In my opinion, this lesson is more benefit. I can find the problem and solve from word marker. It's difficult but I will try to practice. And I was excited all the time

Finally, I use strategies is skimming and scanning when I read the paragraph. I think I should study about vocabulary before to study in class. And prepare more to learn in reading.

Week12 Definition and Classification (continue) and Exemplification

On Monday 10th April, I learned the Definition and Classification continued. We read text 2 about species of whales. We highlight the discourse markers in the text.

We answered questions that which statement is true (T) ir false(F). Teacher gave new sheets for us that was Exemplification and explained some information of this lesson. Exemplification writing uses specific, vivid examples for the purpose of adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea.We read the text 'College students' Pressures', completed the diagram, and highlighted the exemplification markers.

We read the text 2 'Fun things to do in Great Falls'. After that, we found the main idea that was 'There are many ways to have fun in Great Falls without spending a Fortune.’ highlighted the places in the text. We did exercise by matching the place with the activities, underlined them in the text, and highlighted discourse markers.

Next, we read text 3 which showed the examples of hazards in the home that jeopardize a child's safety. We answered the questions correctly and highlighted the examples of hazards in the home, the way to eliminate the danger, and discourse markers.
Then, we read text 4 carefully. The text was "What is Language", circled all the expressions which have the same meaning as for example, drew a line under all the examples, and completed the sentences.

Finally we saw the video presentations about how to make some food of my friends.

I think this lesson is interesting for me and have benefited for the study about reading. This lesson is easy to understand. My attitudes to this lesson is very good.

Week11 Definition and Classification

On Monday 3rd April, We started to study new lesson that was Definition and Classification. She explained the examples and showed some common definition and classification markers .

I looked and read examples and explanation. Second, I did skill practice 1 and skill practice 2. Next,I read the text answered the question about “ What is Anthropology?”.

I think the lesson is difficult for me because when I read the text sometime I don’t understand the meaning and vocabulary about the text has difficult too, so it hard for answer the question in activity.

Finally, I think I should learned more about vocabulary and practice pronunciation. I should study before come to the class.

Next, we started reading in the last text which is Men and Women : Do They speak the Same Language? that Deborah Tannen write You just Don't Understand, this book discusses the many difficulties men and women have in communicating with each other and helps men and women to communicate better. After we had read the text already, we answered the questions in order to check the comprehension. Finally, she assigned us to answer the questions.

http://mookchana.blogspot.com/2015/03/10th-learning-reflection.html

1. Do you agree with Tannen's views on the subject? Be specific about your points of disagreement.
In my opinion, I agree with Tannen's views. Men and women have difficulties in communication because they are raised differently. They also have different opinion lead to anger and hurt feeling, and the ways to handle conflict differently.

2. Are any of Tannen's points about the different personalities of men and women true in your native culture? Explain. Do men and women in your native culture use the language the way Tannen claims American men and women do? Give specific examples.
Men and women have differences of their communication because they are brought up to handle conflict differently. Most of Thai women ,she often uses the silent to tell men when she is not satisfied with something that men do and think the men will know how she feel. She tries to avoid open argument but men don't understand.

I think the texts are quite easy. The discourse markers can help me to find the similarities and differences. I think that this lesson is important in reading. I can compare each of things and know that what is better.
